This is a topic for player of all leagues to vent their frustrations with the quality of the viking balls.  The purpose is to provide Viking with real feedback on the quality of the their product to get them to improve ASAP.

Yes, flaking of ball is a problem, after about 5 or 6 games.  Would definitely seek an alternative.

Played an interclub match last night. It was raining fairly hard at the outset. We experienced exactly what you report. Balls were shot before the first set was complete. Here is a vote for Viking to get on the stick. This is almost as bad as the Wilson attempt a couple years ago. Bill Cody - Cleveland Skating Club - Cleveland, Ohio.

Many of the Viking balls we used last year were lop-sided, out of balance and horrible to play with.  Most all of the Viking balls would be bald and chewed up in a couple sets.  These balls are too expensive to be this bad!  Thinking of going back to Wilsons.

I just bought Wilsons instead of Viking. If they hold up better, I will definitely switch.

I have been lucky to get 3 sets out of a ball this season without them being completely shot!

This season I have seen the ball in shreds before 2 sets are complete.  This is in dry weather with relatively short points- we are not tournament players.   if the ball is shredding fast with us, I can only imagine what some of the higher level players are experiencing.

We played Tue night and the ball was shot by the end of the first set.  In the middle of the set, we stopped play to discuss the pros and cons of peeling the flaking nap off the ball.  Viking knows better and I appreciate the sponsor of this forum for getting this ball rolling.

The Viking ball has always had durability problems compared to the Wilson ball, but it has really gotten extreme this year.  I played a match Tuesday night where we went through three balls.  And we lost in straight sets, so we didn't even manage a set per ball.  Admittedly the boards were wet, which tends to be tougher on the knap, but even when dry, the balls this year can't survive a second set.  The Wilson balls, by comparison, usually can handle 5 or 6 sets.  Plus, the Wilson balls have actually been round for two consecutive years, a feat Viking can't claim.  I'm making the switch.

This is the problem with a monopoly.  I'm going to look into the equipment required to get into this business.  Probably could take big market share quickly with a decent ball

Um....there isn't a Monopoly on balls. Wilson, The Paddle Company (in addition to Viking) all make decent balls.

The Viking balls seem to have lost qulaity over the last couple of years.  Last year, I found the actual letters peeling off after the first few points, along with the knap severely deteriorating after a couple of sets.  Worse yet, I am finding that the knap is starting to actually peel away in strips rather than chip off at one spot.  It's only a matter of time before the ball resembles a Badminton shuttle (birdie).

I actually like the Viking balls.

To me they seem lighter somehow than the Wilson ball - which always seems to play heavy in my opinion.

Now that said, the Vikings were terrible last year with the wobble on 50% of the balls.

this year, the wobble seems fixed, but the problems mentioned here endure.

Any sort of water just strips the flocking right off the ball - I'd say you need a ball per set in damp or wet weather.

Played 4 sets yesterday and we were left with no coverage on the ball by set 3.

Viking still has better coloring than the Wilson Ball - so once beat up - it is still visible - the Wilson turns gray and is hard to follow.
