Men's City - Flight One Championship Report

The top players in the GCPTA came out for the Flight 1 GCPTA Mens Championship on Saturday December 10th.   The returning champs of Patrick Shiels and Pat Gilligan out of Hyde Park were back to defend their title with plenty of capable teams looking to send them home early.   In the Semi’s they were solid and relentless sending Todd/Getgey (CCC and Wyoming) to the back draws.  On the other side of the bracket, #2 seed of Mott/Schmahl (CCC and Glendale) ran into the local buzzsaw of Hall/Mitchell (KCC) and were sent packing to the back draw.   The losers of the semi’s were sent directly to the Reprieves.  In the consolation bracket McTaggart/Gamblin (KCC) battled into the finals where they were met by White/Brightwell (Camargo and CCC).   John White and Hank Brightwell were just too much for them to handle as they claimed the Consolation Bracket.   The Semi Reprieves saw Todd/Getgey take down Mott/Schmahl and then English/Necessary (KCC and CSC) to claim the bracket.

Then everyone gathered around as the National Anthem echoed across the country club (to the demise of Dan Mott’s tiebreaking serve) and awaited the finals.   Hall and Mitchell came out swinging and took the first set.   The champs buckled down and continued their consistent play and making winners harder and harder to come by.   After winning the 2nd set, the Champs put the clamps down to secure the third set and back to back titles.   A fabulous match by all four players and a tremendous day for the GCPTA.

Special Thanks to Josh Heller/Ben Hall and the crew at Kenwood CC who supplied a fantastic lunch and the majority of the court time.  A Big Thank You to Jim Getgey for chairing this event.

Tiffany Foundation Executive Director Corie Floth reports: "Some of the money is going to a local woman who has been fighting inflammatory breast cancer for 4 years....and needs help with paying medical deductible, prescription deductibles....to name just a few."

The event was held at two sites, HPCC and KCC, was a round robin format with lots of door prizes and prizes for ladies with the highest number of points followed by lunch at KCC.

Thanks to Beth Agin, Mary Kirk, Beth Wright, Heather Prop and their volunteers for making this event possible!
