The tennis courts at Washington Park were mostly vacant Saturday, but there was a lot of activity at the four adjacent platform tennis courts. Play will begin Saturday morning at Canoe Brook Country Club and area courts, with finals scheduled for Sunday morning at Canoe Brook. The APTA Grand Prix series began with the Patterson Open Men's and Women's championships. In the Women's division, all four seeded teams reached the semifinals. Top seeds Ana Brzova and Viki Stoklasova claimed the women's crown with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victory over second seeds Cynthia Dardis and Amy Shay. The Men's draw saw the second seeds bow out in the quarterfinals, but the other three top-seeded teams reached the semis. The War at the Shore kicked off the paddle season in New Jersey on September 26 at the Atlantic Club. Although the weather was clear there were gusting winds, which definitely affected play! The draw was small but competitive, with Liz Jaffe and Miguel Cobbs edging Bobo Delaney and Oleg Tioutine by the score of 6-4, 6-4 to claim the title. [ read more ]

Many junior players go off to college and don't find time for paddle. In an effort to "bring them back" a group of pros is offering College 101 paddle events at holiday times. On January 4, Mike Gillespie and Patty Hogan will host a College 101 event at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ. All players (or potential players) 17 and older are invited to attend this fun, free afternoon event. Contact Mike or Patty for more info, or just show up at Canoe Brook between 2:00 and 4:00 that day.
Viking continues the heritage of pushing the boundries and revolutionizing technology with new 19" paddle. While this paddle is not yet approved for National Ranking Tournaments it is available to the public today.

Essex Fells, NJ Helen Garrett and Sandy Simmers have to go down in the record books as one of the most successful teams ever in senior platform tennis play. Once again they claimed the gold medals at the Women's 70+ National Championships, held today at the Essex Fells Country Club. Thanks to Carolyn Tierney for "making it happen" - all who have been involved know that it is a giant juggling feat to end up with 8 teams for this event! Silver medalists were Ginny Sniatkowski & Thelma Huber. Anke Cornell & Gail Condon finished in 3rd place, edging Dolores Krzanowski & Birgit Maio in the playoff match.

On a beautiful day for paddle (if not for Parkway travel), 16 teams enjoyed paddle and lunch.. Being on the wait list sometimes works out... Sue Cecere and Marian Cunningham went from the Wait List to the Winner's Circle at the Indian Trail Women's B tournament on Friday. They defeated Kerry Rice and Kathy Foos in the finals 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Consolation winners were Ava Reynolds and Maggie Magaldi; Reprieve winners were Jeanne Kelly and Margaret O'Meara and Last Chance champs were ITC members Jennifer Chang and Jodie Pani.

Indian Trail B
Franklin Lakes , NJ Indian Trail Club was the site of a Men's B tournament this weekend. The weather was beautiful and the competition was fierce, with a number of 3-setters, including the finals. Steve Bernt and Todd Smith were crowned champs after their 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Jiri Janko and Hans Tang. Consolation winners were John Holland and Kevin Johnston; Reprieve Champs were Gary Chin and Ken Persson and the Last Chance went to locals John Garone and Bruce Gallagher.

Kids Kickoff the Paddle Season
Another season is here and several dedicated teaching pros have volunteered their time to get kids pumped for play by offering two hours of drills and thrills and tricks and treats. Hosted by Drew Broderick and the Canoe Brook Country Club, this free event will run from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 26. All junior players - from beginner to advanced levels - who are at least 8 years old are invited to attend. Patty Hogan, Mike Gillespie, Ana Brzova and other local teaching pros will be joining in the fun. If your junior paddle player would like to participate, or if you have questions about the event, please contact Patty Hogan at firstname.lastname@example.org.
