The Orange Lawn Tennis Club Women's Region 1 PCQ was played in the first "paddle weather" of the season. At the end of a full day of competition, Jill Feher and Darlene McGlone defeated Carolyn Cutler and Stacie Stephens to claim the crown and start their PC quest. In the longest match of the day, Kori Lannon and Sue Pijawka outlasted Anne Delaney and Amanda Dolan for the Conso title. Carrie Rabuse and Jessica Fisher were Reprieve champions. Tournament Director Phyllis Weiss was thanked for her 22 years at the helm, as she will turn over the reins to Darlene McGlone for next year.

The Women's "B" season resumed today with the Beacon Hill Women's "B" tournament. With a full draw and beautiful weather, there was a lot of fun to be had! Congratulations to Carolyn Cutler and Lucia Drumgould, who defeated Debbie Crisfield and Nicky Curragh to claim the title. Other winners include Nancy Leccese - Jill Collins, Consolation winners; Rebecca Michalopoulos - Alexis Maloney, Reprieve Winners; and Courtney Blundin - Judy Taggart, Last Chance winners. Shadow Lake Invitational - Women
The 32nd annual Shadow Lake Invitational was its usual rousing success - with free clinics and exhibitions and 4 simultaneous tournaments! The Women's "A" tournament was a Region 4 Presidents Cup Qualifier, but a team from Region 1 took home the trophies! Jill Feher and Darlene Finnegan defeated Kelly Fisher and Nathalie Lemieux in the finals by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. The "B" division featured mostly locals, with Carey Ann Denefrio and Lana Khvalina Ivy beating Maureen Connelly and Mimi Hartney for the crown. Beacon Hill Men's B
New on the calendar this year is the Beacon Hill Club Men's "B" tournament. The target group for this event is men who play in NJMPTA Divisions F, G, H, I or J, or those of similar abilities. Director Darlene Finnegan is promising a fun day of play on Sunday, October 24 at Beacon Hill and local clubs.
Once again the Jane B. Fleming Memorial Region I Women's tournament was a rousing success. Forty teams from the three state region had a great day of play, with the weather cooperating nicely. In the semis, #3 Ana Brzova and Judy Arden defeated top-seeded Darlene Finnegan and Jill Feher in a tight match. Second-seeded Aila Main and Lauren Mandell defeated Ingrid Lopp and Kathy Hobbins in the other semifinal. Lopp and Hobbins had defeated #4 seeded Louise Cash and Martha Loring in the quarters. Main and Mandell went on to take the title.

Competition for positions on the Region I Women's Presidents Cup team promises to be fierce this season if the first PCQ is any indication. Ana Brzova and Michelle Jellinek won an exciting semifinal battle over Andrea Noyes and Susan Penney 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Donna Charlton and Janet Faig hung on to win a tight semifinal over Jill Feher and Darlene Finnegan by the score of 6-1, 2-6, 7-6. In the finals, Charlton and Faig jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and fought back from 0-3 in the second set tiebreaker before closing out the last 7 points of the match. View the complete draw
Rain, rain go away was the chant of the day...and finally it worked! But not until all but the final matches were played! The Sally, a platform tennis tournament held to benefit the Sanctuary Shelter at Children's Village was held in drenching rain throughout the morning and drizzle and showers in the afternoon. Judy Arden and Susan Lovejoy defeated Louise Cash and Darlene Finnegan in the main draw final. Other winners were: Hogan-McMahon (1st Consolation), Palmedo-Simensky (1st Consolation Reprieve), Kaplan-Schwab (2nd Consolation), Cherna-Wachtenheim (2nd Consolation Reprieve) and Cromie-Saydah (16 Reprieve). Sharon Saunders and Jo Rogers reported that through entry fees, donations, raffles and silent auctions the event raised enough to cover more than one-third of the Sanctuary's annual needs.
Beacon Hill "B"
Summit, NJ The 1st Annual Beacon Hill “B” tournament gave in to Mother Nature for one day, but went off without a hitch the following day. Tournament Director Darlene Finnegan let common sense and safety rule and postponed the tournament from Wednesday, January 7th due to weather reports promising a full day of rain and freezing rain. Thursday saw a few snow showers, but nothing to interrupt play.
