The New Jersey Men's League Classic was contested on Saturday and Sunday, but winners have not been determined yet. After 5 rounds of play on Saturday, the field was greatly reduced, but Mother Nature and common sense prevailed after the semifinals on Sunday morning. Anthony Cosimano and Steve Haller are vying for their 8th title, and 3rd in a row. They will have to defeat the 2006 champs, Mike Atkinson and Bill Kloss, in order to enter the record books again. The match is scheduled for Tuesday night at Canoe Brook. Consolation and Last Chance winners were determined, with Andy Provost-Mike Claps and Jay Zaslower-Rich Halik coming out on top. Reprieve and Buckshot finals will be held this week as well.

108 children competed in the 10th annual New England Junior Open on December 5.   The weather was a mix of rain and snow and a real test of playing in tough conditions. The level of play and sportsmanship was exemplary.  All players received their APTA wall clock and NEJr long sleeve shirts.  A special thanks to Cindy Prendergast for the “safety” orange and green shirts, and to all the parent volunteers who manned the huts.

The Detroit Invitational celebrated its 40th year! Nannie Maxwell, Patrick Mercier and Tom Dow worked hard to pull it all together, even finding a replacement partner mid-tournament due to an unfortunate injury! Chris Struck and Drew Eberly came out on top, defeating Marc Duvin & Kevin Owen in the finals. Once again the Jane B. Fleming Memorial Region I Women's tournament was a rousing success. Forty teams from the three state region had a great day of play, with the weather cooperating nicely. In the semis, #3 Ana Brzova and Judy Arden defeated top-seeded Darlene Finnegan and Jill Feher in a tight match. Second-seeded Aila Main and Lauren Mandell defeated Ingrid Lopp and Kathy Hobbins in the other semifinal. Lopp and Hobbins had defeated #4 seeded Louise Cash and Martha Loring in the quarters. A weekend of great competition wrapped up at the New York Athletic Club on Sunday with finals in both the Men's Open and Men's B divisions of the Sound Shore Invitational. Locals Bill Taubner and Sean O'Neill claimed the "B" crown with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Zeljko Knezevic and Jim Lipinski. Brad Easterbrook and Alex Bancila were able to defend their title against first time finalists Brian O'Connor and Mark Parsons in an entertaining 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 match.

The 9th Annual Mason Dixon Cup took place on Saturday, October 24th at Greenville Country Club just north of Wilmington, Delaware. With two washouts prior to this year, the two intra-regional teams were deadlocked, 3 wins apiece, so 2009 was the year for one side to take the lead in this season opening Region III invitational event.

The very popular "B Tour" continued with a event at the Indian Trail Club. Sixteen women's teams gathered on a beautiful day and enjoyed competition, friends and lunch. Kerry Bascio and Anna Rose survived four 3-set matches to win the inaugural crown over Sue Cecere and Carol D'Alessandro in the final. Other winners include Amy Massa & Patrice Shapiro in the Consolation, Tammy Morel & Jean Gaviglio in the Reprieve and Corinne Errico & Betty Michinard in the Last Chance. Leslie Haskins & Mary Hutchinson won an award for traveling the farthest - all the way from Rhode Island!

With deep sadness we acknowledge the death of Winnie Hatch. A service will be held later in the year to celebrate her life and spirit. Winnie was known throughout our sport as one of its greatest competitors, but also as one of its greatest advocates. Always one to give back to the game, she introduced literally hundreds of new players to platform tennis. A multi-time Senior champion, Winnie was willing to play with anyone in any event. Last February Winnie was honored with induction into the Platform Tennis Hall of Fame. Region 2 held its first PCQ of the season at the Shelter Harbor Inn in Westerly, Rhode Island. Though the draw was small, the competition was excellent. The finals pitted the 2 top seeds against each other, with Jerry Albrikes and Johan DuRandt escaping with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alex Seiler and Naren Dhamodharen. Jerry and Johan led the first set 5-0 before Alex and Naren came back to win in a tiebreaker.

The Sound Shore Invitational returns for another year! Directors Kevin Dillon and John Walzer have announced that the tournament will be held at the New York Athletic Club and other area sites. Events will include the first Region I Men's ranking tournament of the year as well as a strong "B" draw. Sign up is online only. Space is limited in each draw, so early sign-up is suggested.

Rain, rain go away was the chant of the day...and finally it worked! But not until all but the final matches were played! The Sally, a platform tennis tournament held to benefit the Sanctuary Shelter at Children's Village was held in drenching rain throughout the morning and drizzle and showers in the afternoon. Judy Arden and Susan Lovejoy defeated Louise Cash and Darlene Finnegan in the main draw final. Other winners were: Hogan-McMahon (1st Consolation), Palmedo-Simensky (1st Consolation Reprieve), Kaplan-Schwab (2nd Consolation), Cherna-Wachtenheim (2nd Consolation Reprieve) and Cromie-Saydah (16 Reprieve). Sharon Saunders and Jo Rogers reported that through entry fees, donations, raffles and silent auctions the event raised enough to cover more than one-third of the Sanctuary's annual needs.

The weather seemed designed to test the mettle of the players, but the players prevailed! By midday, the rains gave way to mostly gray skies and the spectators came outdoors to watch exciting semifinals and finals in the Princeton Mixed. Director Barbara Rebak's desire to not only resurrect the PIMPT but to make it once again one of the most fun tournaments on the calendar was surely fulfilled. Liz Jaffe and Juan Arraya topped the field with steady and athletic play, prevailing over Jaclyn Williamson and Jeff Lyon in the finals. Play took place at The Patterson Club and at Fairfield Beach Club, Country Club of Fairfield, Aspetuck Valley Country Club, Fairfield County hunt Club, Wilton Riding Club and Weston Field Club under perfect fall conditions. David Mueller and Scott McKessy repeated as champs, defeating Tim Randall and Gaynor Brennan in the finals. With a storm warning hanging over their heads, 32 women arrived for the Atlantic Classic Women's "B" tournament. They were rewarded with beautiful gray skies and crisp temperatures. Teams from throughout New Jersey and one pair from Rhode Island had a great day of competition. Deirdre Hewett and Judy Brucia (pictured with Tournament Director Drew Broderick) defeated Lisa Botta and Caroline Beers to win the first "B" crown of the year. Other winners were Leslie Haskins-Mary Hutchinson (Consolation), Tami Gilmartin-Joan Crines (Reprieve) and Marylyn McLaughlin-Kelly Gardiner (Last Chance). View the full draws here. A strong, competitive field opened the season on a beautiful fall day  in New Jersey at The War at the Shore. Director Judy Takach reported these results: Liz Jaffe & Juan Pablo Arraya are the champs, outlasting Kerri Delmonico & Ray Crosta in a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 final. The semis each went 3 sets, with Jaffe/Arraya ousting Cooey Burhart-Lyon & Tim McAvoy and Kerri & Ray beating Tonia Mangan & Scott Arenstein. The Quarter Reprieve saw Aila Main/Mike Stulac defeat Judy Takach/Bob Winchester. The consolation finals featured Adrianna Melittas/Miguel Cobbs over Maria Manley/Bill Kloss. Last Chance was won by Molly McDougald/Bob Rebak over Joan Crines/Brian Leonard. Now it's on to the PIMPT!
