The New Jersey Men's League Classic was contested on Saturday and Sunday, but winners have not been determined yet. After 5 rounds of play on Saturday, the field was greatly reduced, but Mother Nature and common sense prevailed after the semifinals on Sunday morning. Anthony Cosimano and Steve Haller are vying for their 8th title, and 3rd in a row. They will have to defeat the 2006 champs, Mike Atkinson and Bill Kloss, in order to enter the record books again. The match is scheduled for Tuesday night at Canoe Brook. Consolation and Last Chance winners were determined, with Andy Provost-Mike Claps and Jay Zaslower-Rich Halik coming out on top. WOMEN'S - Cynthia Dardis + Amy Shay took the honors, they defeated Sue Tarzian + Keri Flynn, 6-4; 6-3.
In the MEN'S 'B', the young Brosnan brothers, Chris + Patrick defeated Paul Sperry + Steve Roberts, 6-4; 6-3.

108 children competed in the 10th annual New England Junior Open on December 5. The weather was a mix of rain and snow and a real test of playing in tough conditions. The level of play and sportsmanship was exemplary. All players received their APTA wall clock and NEJr long sleeve shirts. A special thanks to Cindy Prendergast for the “safety” orange and green shirts, and to all the parent volunteers who manned the huts.

Once again the Jane B. Fleming Memorial Region I Women's tournament was a rousing success. Forty teams from the three state region had a great day of play, with the weather cooperating nicely. In the semis, #3 Ana Brzova and Judy Arden defeated top-seeded Darlene Finnegan and Jill Feher in a tight match. Second-seeded Aila Main and Lauren Mandell defeated Ingrid Lopp and Kathy Hobbins in the other semifinal. Lopp and Hobbins had defeated #4 seeded Louise Cash and Martha Loring in the quarters. Main and Mandell went on to take the title.

A weekend of great competition wrapped up at the New York Athletic Club on Sunday with finals in both the Men's Open and Men's B divisions of the Sound Shore Invitational. Locals Bill Taubner and Sean O'Neill claimed the "B" crown with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Zeljko Knezevic and Jim Lipinski. Brad Easterbrook and Alex Bancila were able to defend their title against first time finalists Brian O'Connor and Mark Parsons in an entertaining 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 match.

The 9th Annual Mason Dixon Cup took place on Saturday, October 24th at Greenville Country Club just north of Wilmington, Delaware. With two washouts prior to this year, the two intra-regional teams were deadlocked, 3 wins apiece, so 2009 was the year for one side to take the lead in this season opening Region III invitational event.

Winnie was known throughout our sport as one of its greatest competitors, but also as one of its greatest advocates. Always one to give back to the game, she introduced literally hundreds of new players to platform tennis. A multi-time Senior champion, Winnie was willing to play with anyone in any event. Region 2 held its first PCQ of the season at the Shelter Harbor Inn in Westerly, Rhode Island. Though the draw was small, the competition was excellent. The finals pitted the 2 top seeds against each other, with Jerry Albrikes and Johan DuRandt escaping with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alex Seiler and Naren Dhamodharen. Jerry and Johan led the first set 5-0 before Alex and Naren came back to win in a tiebreaker.

Rain, rain go away was the chant of the day...and finally it worked! But not until all but the final matches were played! The Sally, a platform tennis tournament held to benefit the Sanctuary Shelter at Children's Village was held in drenching rain throughout the morning and drizzle and showers in the afternoon. Judy Arden and Susan Lovejoy defeated Louise Cash and Darlene Finnegan in the main draw final. Other winners were: Hogan-McMahon (1st Consolation), Palmedo-Simensky (1st Consolation Reprieve), Kaplan-Schwab (2nd Consolation), Cherna-Wachtenheim (2nd Consolation Reprieve) and Cromie-Saydah (16 Reprieve). Sharon Saunders and Jo Rogers reported that through entry fees, donations, raffles and silent auctions the event raised enough to cover more than one-third of the Sanctuary's annual needs.

Director Barbara Rebak's desire to not only resurrect the PIMPT but to make it once again one of the most fun tournaments on the calendar was surely fulfilled.
