Action from Mens Finals

The 31st Annual Long Island Invitational was conducted December 1-3. In addition to the Men's National Ranking and "B" Tournaments 2 new tournaments were added this year, Women's National Ranking and Men's 95+.

The weekend kicked off with 20 women's teams competing at Nassau C.C., Creek and Piping Rock. The weather was certainly not favorable for paddle, rain with 70 degree temperatures. Cynthia Dardis/Amy Shay gained the finals with a 3 set win over Tonia Mangan/Bobo Delaney, Kerri Delmonico/Isla Main advanced to the finals with a 3 set win over Kerri Flynn/Susan Tarzian. The final, due to weather, was put off until Saturday at the Huntington C.C.. After a slow start Delmonico/Main prevailed 7-5; 6-3.

The Men's 95+, due to weather, was postponed until Friday December 8th. The 95+ will be contested at the Huntington C.C..

The Men's National Ranking tournament attracted 24 teams, the strongest field in recent years. 24 teams started at 8:00am on Saturday, Huntington C.C. and Nassau C.C. were the main venues with Creek, Piping Rock, Huntington Bay Club playing supporting roles. By mid-afternoon, Alex Bancila/David Ohlmuller and John Schmitt/Dan Rothschild Drew Broderick/Guy Moore had reached the semi-finals. The semi-finals found the First and Second seeds teams victorious. The spectators who gathered at the Huntington C.C. on Sunday morning were treated to 2 1/2 hours of an remarkable display of skill and athleticism by Mike Cochrane/Mike Stulac and John Schmitt/Dan Rothschild with Schmitt/Rothschild prevailing 0-6; 7-5; 11-9, truly a match that did not deserve a losing side.

The Men's "B" attracted 16 teams who gathered at Plandome C.C., Port Washington Y.C. and Manhasset Bay Y.C. on Saturday morning. Reaching the semi-finals were the teams Peter Bond/Chris Falvey - Craig Henne/Doug Graham and Fitzsimons/Rice Peter Samaan/Tim Schmitt. Fitzsimons/Rice prevailed over Henne/Graham in a close well played final.

Thanks to all who played a part in making this the best weekend of paddle on Long Island since the 2002 Nationals' !
