GREATER BOSTON PLATFORM TENNIS LEAGUE COMPLETES 34th SEASON
04-16-2011
Greater Boston Platform Tennis League

BOSTON, MA
Submitted by Mike Reed
Much is written and known about the ballyhooed platform tennis leagues in Chicago, Long Island and Westchester County but very little is known about the Greater Boston Platform Tennis league that just completed its 34th season of Monday night play from October to April.  Read more about GBTPTL 34th season.

GBPTL 34th Season
GBPTL
Pictured is the 2010-2011 GBPTL Champions The Country Club.
The GBPTL was founded in 1978 and has been running strong ever since.  A and B level league teams from 12 different country club and paddle facilities in the greater Boston, MA area get together every Monday night starting at 6 PM to do battle and then enjoy some camaraderie after each match.  Each match consists of at least 6 teams from each club although B league matches have been known to garner as many as 13 teams to play on a Monday night with matches, dinner and drinks lasting well into the wee hours of Tuesday morning.   This means that almost 600 greater Boston paddlers are foregoing Monday night football and the like to compete at Platform tennis.  The league should gain a little more respect as some of the players in the league are the likes of Johan DuRandt (Nationals’ champion and finalist), Bill Anderson (Nationals’ champion), Leo Power and Rob Pierce (45s National Champions) to name just a few.

To say that the play is fast and furious would be an understatement.  Of course, everyone makes time for dinner after play as the host team provides a grill dinner and plenty of liquid refreshment.  Many B league players who could ordinarily play A league like to stay where they are because the meals include beef tenderloin, vintage port and cigars.  The 2010-1 champion was The Country Club of Brookline with a hard fought win over Concord Country Club to take the Burke cup.  Twig Burke of Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, MA was one of the strong proponents and commissioner of the league for many years.

If you are ever in the greater Boston area in the winter on a Monday night, or if you are moving to the Boston area and want to get into a paddle league the GBPTL is your thing.
