Update on our Platform Tennis program in The Villages, FL.
We have not skipped a beat, even in this 90+ degree weather, to introduce Platform Tennis to the 80,000+ residents in The Villages. We have run our weekly "Introduction to Platform Tennis - 101" all year long and have attracted hundreds to our sessions. Every other Friday, we offer our Platform Tennis 102 (the next stage in learning the sport after they have taken 101) which is the springboard into our open play sessions, leagues, and tournaments.
On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, beginning at 5:30, our six courts are filled with our beginners, C players, and B players in organized open play. Monday mornings, our A players meet from 8am - 11am for open play throughout the spring and summer.
Sunday, July 3rd, we will hold a "Minute To Win It" event hosted by Russ Jones (me) and sponsored by Wilson Sports. Presenting our players of all levels with skills challenges related to paddle, they will have the opportunity to win sleeves of balls, Wilson backpack sport bags, and Wilson paddles. We are expecting a grand turnout. This is a precursor to our Firecracker Open Round Robin Tournament.
Monday, July 4th, (Firecracker Open) we are holding our third Round Robin Tournament for residents of The Villages. Competing in one of three levels, A, B, or C, our players will have the opportunity to compete for awards and prizes provided by Wilson Sports and Viking.
As you can see, we are definitely "playing out of the box" with such interest and activity in Warm-Weather (or shall I say Hot-Weather) Platform Tennis. It's interesting how guests that are devout paddle players up north have found their way to our courts, turning up their noses, initially, but then returning day after day to play!
With the only complex of courts in the state of Florida, one can only conclude that paddle is alive in well and more than just surviving in Central Florida!
