It Was Classic
12-12-2011
League Classic 2011

Essex Fells , NJ
With a larger than anticipated crowd of spectators, the keg was "kicked" by 8:00 PM and the grill was in use only for hand-warming by 9:00, but the action was just starting to heat up as the finals of the NJ Men's League Classic were beginning. The semifinals saw top-seeded Jon Lubow and Steve DeRose drop the first set and then storm back to defeat Clay Bibbee and Mike Stulac 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Drew Broderick and Pat Kelly, seeded 4th, overwhelmed #2 seeds Anthony Cosimano and Steve Haller 6-2, 6-0. LEAGUE CLASSIC WAS CLASSIC

The finals of the Classic pitted two teams with tremendous skills and patience and featured very long rallies and perseverance. Down early in each set, Drew Broderick and Pat Kelly fought their way back to the title by never giving up. In each point, each game and each set, both sides made seemingly impossible "saves" to keep the point alive. The final score was 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.

For two years, the weather has not cooperated for the traditional Sunday finals. As a result, League President Jim Irwin and his board made a decision to play through the quarterfinals of this 128 team draw on Saturday and they scheduled the semis and finals of the main draw for Monday night. The turn-out would seem to make it a "no brainer" to continue with this plan. Spectators were crowded into the newly-refurbished Essex Fells Country Club hut, clustered around a fire pit on the hill, warming their hands at the grill (where The Toddski presided as grillmaster) and gathered on the deck while enjoying beverages, burgers and dogs. (One person even brought his own veggie burger!) Yes, the keg was kicked early, but there were plenty of canned drinks available to ward off the cold!

As a prelude to the seminfinal, the Buckshot (32 Reprieve) finals were played, with Jamie Ferriero and Bill Grassmeyer winning over Scott Giannetti and Henry Rowland. Other backdraw play was completed on Sunday. Consolation: Gilley & Bell defeated Araneo & Heath; 64 Reprieve: Faig & Faig defeated Smith & Hall; Last Chance (Conso Reprieve): Klipstein & Laffey defeated Johnson & Aranowitz.
