On January 12th @ 7pm, The Midwestern's Platform Tennis Tournament will once again take the national spotlight as they co-host w/ Four Bridges C.C(West Chester,OH) an event called "The Battle of the Paddles". Both The Midwestern's and Four Bridges have had their share of national exposure in the past w/ such events as "The Battle @ Beckett" and most recently "The Premier Cup".
This unprecedented event will bring together the current top team in the world of Paddle Tennis and two of Platform's most talented National Champions! Scott Freedman and Don Schwake from Venice Beach, CA. will compete for the first time ever on a Platform tennis court against Platform's duo of Bill Anderson and Flip Goodspeed. Freedman is Paddle Tennis's premier player and is a 19 time World Champion & currently holds all major titles in the sport! Schwake is currently ranked #2 in the world and is considered to be the sports next great player. On the Platform end, Anderson & Goodspeed have won over 9 APTA National Championships. Anderson won his first NAtional Championship last March w/ partner Mike Stulac and along w/ Stulac currently hold the sports #1 ranking. Goodspeed has accomplished almost everything a player could achieve in the sport of Platform. During his career, Goodspeed has won 7 APTA National Championships w/ partner Scott Mansager.Together Anderson and Goodspeed's experience and athleticism create an exciting representation for the sport of Platform!
Four Bridges Director of Racquet sports and organizer Jason Gray has been trying to bring thie two sports together for such a match for over two years! "It's great for fans to finally see both sports come together for one great battle!" says Gray. And with the help of Title Sponsor Wilson Racquet Sports and other sponsors such as Premier Platform Tennis, Reebok, Dickerson Distributing, Staybridge Suites, and Four Bridges C.C. helped bring this exciting concept to reality. The format will be 2 out of 3 sets and as a bonus, The Midwestern's Tournament Committee has granted Freedman & Schwake a wild card into the weekend tournament. "Bringing the two Paddle Sports together for the first time will allow fans from all over the country to experience something unique and create exposure for both sports" says David Dodge of Premier Platform Tennis.
As a part of the agreement, a chosen Platform team will be granted a wild card into Paddle's US Open National Championships in late February in Las Vegas with a history making $100,000 total purse. To commemorate both history making events, The Tennis Channel has agreed to televise both later in 2006.
