Vanity Fair Publishes Article on the Growing Popularity of Pickelball

Vanity Fair - Oct 28th 2021

The article is featured in the November issue of Vanity Fair and discusses everything from the popularity of pickleball among the Hollywood movie stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, to it's roots (perhaps on Bainbridge Island, Washington). Pickleball is growing at an unprecedented rate due to it's inexpensive cost to play, ease to learn, and that anyone can play regardless of athleticism. Pickleball courts are popping up just about everywhere, and it's becoming a sport that isn't only played by your grandparents. The younger generations are flocking to the sport as schools are even beginning to add pickleball to their phys-ed curriculum. In addition to DiCaprio, celebrities such as Owen Wilson, Melinda Gates, Larry David, Reese Witherspoon, and the Kardashians are just a few of the diehards that have their own court, or are building one.

Superstar pickleball player, and National Champion, Ben John's earns about $250,000 per year through playing, teaching, promoting pickleball, where most other pro's don't come close. Still, earning a real living as a pickleball professional lags way behind most other sports. To put pickleball in perspective, compare John's earnings to fellow niche-sport GOAT, disc-golf legend Paul McBeth - who just inked a $10-million guaranteed deal - and you'll see how far pickleball lags behind.
