THE "SALLY" NETS $28,000 for CHILDRENS VILLAGE
11-01-2007

Scarsdale, NY
Twenty-seven years ago a group of Westchester women conceived of a platform tennis tournament as a way to raise money in support of a cause – the Scarsdale Boy Scouts.  That event has evolved through the years, and shifted its beneficiary to The Children’s Village many years ago. For the last five years it has targeted The Sanctuary, a youth shelter operated since 1984 by Children’s Village. view details and pictures.

Known locally as “Children’s Village” for years, in 2005 the tournament was renamed “The Sally” in honor and in memory of Sally Rogers.  Sally was involved in the tournament from its beginning and served as it chairman for at least 10 years.  Since its renaming, the event has raised more than $80,000.

The emphasis of this event is on camaraderie, fun and “shopping for a cause”. Through entry fees, sponsorships and a spectacular auction, the 2007 tournament netted $28,000 for their cause.

Anna Filardi, Jinx Chapman and Barbara Underhill were the dynamic auction committee that presented the players with 75 exciting items that earned the tournament over $5000.  So that no one had to worry about feeding their family the night of the tournament, Mary Cosgrove and an amazing array of cooks had dinner and goodies available for purchase and packaged to take home.

Winners and Finalists

This year’s tournament featured 44 teams representing four states.  Cynthia Dardis and Amy Shay defeated Louise Cash and Michele Jellinek to capture the title.

The Sally chairman Sharon Saunders states, “It is a privilege to run this tournament.  Sally taught me everything I know about attention to detail, always saying thank you twice, commitment to responsibility and of course sportsmanship.”

In addition to those mentioned above, Sharon would like to thank Jo Rogers for his charm and hard work in getting the ladies on the courts through the morning rain and throughout the day; Barbara Rau, Bertan Cikigil and Andrew Saunders who kept everyone on task at the “outer courts” during the morning; Federal Astoria Bank for their continued sponsorship of this event; and all those who came out to play and socialize and shop.
