On another beautiful winter day in Chicago the youth came out to continue the growth of the sport through their participation in the Chicago Junior Open, part of the Viking Junior Tour. There were familiar platform tennis names among the 52 participants, and those who came to Winnetka were lucky to see great paddle, great sportsmanship and well-behaved juniors. While “going for the gold” they weren’t afraid to go for the screens as well!
Three of the age groups (10 & Under, 14 & Under and 18 & Under) played in the traditional round robin format and the 12 & Under group played a regular bracket tournament.
Brothers Peter and Henry Horne took home the 10’s gold with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Davis Johnson and Wyatt Marshall. Alex Applebaum and Taylor Click defeated John Harmon and William Martin 6-4, 6-4 to claim the 14 & Under title. The 18’s had an exciting final in which Fitz Bowen and Ryan Richter took out Peter McNitt and Will Sutton 6-3, 6-2.
With a 16 team draw, the 12’s had a full tournament. Back draw winners were: Last Chance Brett Steilen and Tommy Metzger; Consolation Matthew Duffy and Jack Duffy; Quarter Reprieve John Franzese and Parker Marsh.
The exciting semis saw 2 great matches with Luke Massar and Jackson Smyth taking out the team of Alex Grant and Johnathon Benedetto and the team of Clarke Hough and Keegan Filkin taking out Marino and Winkler. This set up an exciting final in which the team of Massar and Smyth squeaked by Hough and Filkin 6-4, 7-6 (5).
At the end of the day the 52 winners and their parents made this another great success in platform tennis. I want to thank everyone who helped and to those that made it possible. Until February 14, 2009 we will wait to see how the juniors take to the courts.
