Old Man Winter tried to get involved in the Sound Shore Seniors tournaments at Fox Meadow Tennis Club on Friday and Saturday, but the hardy veterans were having none of it! Friday's play saw 24 teams with combined ages of 125 or more who braved single digit and low teens temperatures to compete. Friday morning was a reunion for some teams and players and first-time introductions for others. The camaraderie and competition helped to warm up the players as they competed in round robin play throughout the morning. After lunch, teams were placed in brackets based on their results from the morning.
In the "A" Bracket, Yellow Group winners Scott Estes - Jerry Whitlock defeated Blue Group champs Tom Caputo - Gary Cochrane in the finals by the score of 6-4, 7-5. In the only upset in bracket play, the new team of Bob Brown - Ed Gartner defeated John Russo - Gene Hannigan.
The "B" B racket was won by Red Group players Ray Lamontagne - Russ Kohl, who topped Blue Group's Jim Dey - John Spears in an 8-6 pro set.
"C" Bracket winners were Green Group's Charlie Curtis - Jo Rogers over Yellow Group's Frank Lorenzetti - Stanley Kleckner in a 9-7 pro set.
Saturday was even colder than Friday, but fierce competition was the order of the day. Play began with the temperature at 4 degrees and Robert Krauss in shorts! After morning round robin play, Heath-Heath, Krauss-Ratner, Teglas-Ertischek and Ettinger-Steiner advanced into the semifinals. Steve and Tim Heath came out on top, followed by Robert Krauss and Evan Ratner. Tournament director Tony Ettinger and partner came in third place. Durfee-Durfee won the "Next Best Flight".
